inFAMOUS: Second Son – Reviewed!

It’s funny, I’ve never struggled so much to write a review about a game I thoroughly enjoyed. Every time I started writing, I would re-read my piece, come to the conclusion that it didn’t do the game justice, bin it and start over. What I’ve come to realise is that since inFAMOUS: Second Son is a fun and frantic game it needs a fun and frantic review that cuts straight to the awesome core of this superhero adventure! So here goes, strap yourself in! Especially if you’re reading this in a car…

There’s a big city to be explored and you’ll want to jump right in. Literally.

The Graphics

Let’s face it, everyone is coming to this game to get a look at what the PS4 is capable of and it doesn’t take long to realise that this is one gorgeous looking game. The animation is smooth, the city looks great and the super powers dazzle. One mission in the game has you climbing to the top of the Seattle Space Needle. I stopped, mid-mission, and just marveled at the stunning draw distance and surroundings. In fact inFAMOUS: Second Son had me whacking the Share Button on my DualShock 4 controller more times than HairyBack Tones whacks his *CENSORED*

The lighting effects in the game are truly stunning at times.

The Gameplay

inFAMOUS: Second Son continues in the vein of the first two games offering you an open world experience in which you tackle foes with an arsenal of abilities. However, this time around you’ll find a much deeper system of combat and power upgrades as well as the option to wield multiple different powers as you absorb energy from smoke, neon and even TV. You can never possess more than one power at a time however which adds a new dimension of strategy as you may favour one ability over another when it comes to city traversal or out-and-out brawling. Most important of all, inFAMOUS: Second Son is fun and addictive to play and offers tonnes of missions, side-quests and unlockables. It’s one of those games that will keep you playing long after you had been intending to. There’s always something to explore just around the corner.

Draining power looks cool and makes you feel invincible!

The Story

Some reviewers have criticised the story of inFAMOUS: Second Son as being uninteresting. While it is certainly a more grounded tale compared to something like the unfathomable Prototype series, I found its straight-forward story-telling to be one of the game’s strong points. As petty troublemaker Delsin Rowe you’re presented with a quest to save your friends and family from the leader of an organisation that is trying to imprison anybody with specials powers. Whether you choose to play as good or evil you’ll butt heads with your sensible, by-the-books brother and it is the relationship between Delsin and his brother that held my interest the most. I chose to play the whole game as a good guy but the story was engrossing enough that at one point I desperately wanted to take the evil way out. Throw in some well written witty banter between characters and you’ve got the making of a story that could pass for a Joss Whedon screenplay.

Flying and hovering looks great and feels awesome to pull off.

The Verdict

Games like inFAMOUS: Second Son are the reason you bought a next gen system. It looks great, it plays great and you get a lot of bang for your buck. It took me about 13 hours to one hundred per cent the game and I will undoubtedly be going back for an evil repeat play-through. Sucker Punch Productions have crafted a game worthy of the mighty PS4 and I will be keeping my eyes pealed for future DLC. I’m also curious as to where they’ll take the series from here but for now I’ll kick back and spray-paint some guy’s back porch before blasting him in the face with a smoke shot. It’s a tough job saving the world but someone’s gotta do it.
