Ratchet & Clank: Nexus – The Review

Ratchet & Clank: Nexus is the latest game in the popular platforming series from Insomniac Games and is quite possibly the last entry in the series that we’ll see on the current gen PS3. It certainly seems like a swansong of sorts but did it leave me humming a merry tune or was this about as fun as listening to Susan Boyle strangle a cat with barbed wire? Well you’ll be delighted to know that this a very fun and enjoyable game and, just like the one in Love/Hate, the cat is safe and sound. Ratchet & Clank is a series I’ve dipped in and out of over the years but it is clear from the outset that this is one of the strongest entries in recent times, albeit a deliberately short one.

The heroic duo are back for another adventure. It’s like Lethal Weapon in space.

The game opens with our heroes aboard a huge spaceship prison that is transporting dangerous psychopath Vendra Prog to the Vartax Detention Centre to pay for her crimes. Things take a turn for the awesome when her brutish brother Neftin Prog attempts a jailbreak on a moving spacecraft. I’ll be honest the opening blew me away and felt genuinely exciting. This might be my inner Battlestar Galactica nerd speaking but I found myself hoping that the entire game would take place aboard this ship in the cold recesses of space. However once the ship gets blown appart, and after some some anti-gravity space exploration that would make Sandra Bullock proud, Ratchet gets back into the familiar territoy of cross-space planet-hopping.

This Lombax boldly goes where no Lombax has gone before…

The story is genuinely interesting and ramps up the excitement and humour where appropriate. The art style looks clean and colourful but, after seeing what the PS4 is capable of, will definitely benefit from a lick of next gen paint if it makes an appearance on Sony’s latest console. A stand out for me was the musical score which has some really impressive, and sometimes haunting, themes.

Ratchet looks ready to tackle the Necromorphs of Dead Space in this get up!

The gameplay is textbook Ratchet & Clank. You’ll be running, jumping and firing a whole manner of crazy weaponry throughout the five planets you get to explore. It felt to me as though there was more shooting in this game than the last title I played and it made me realise just how good and fun the combat in these games is. There are plenty of new weapons to tinker with including the Winterizer which turns your enemies into easily destructible snowmen while blaring a festive Christmas tune. The new anti-Gravity gameplay is very enjoyable and there are some new gravity tether elements which will remind you of Portal puzzles but aren’t quite as taxing on the brain. One of the stand outs for me was the jetpack; possibly the best use of a jetpack since Sean Connery flew over a roof. Clank also gets some love in the form of some unique 2D platforming sections that centre around you altering the gravitational pull to help navigate Clank through the levels.

The combat and gun play feels really fun and frantic at times…

Ratchet & Clank: Nexus feels like a fitting epilogue to the R&C Futures Series going so far as to highlight some of the series high points in an in-game museum that Ratchet frequents on one of the game’s missions. The game will only take you five or six hours to complete but given that it comes with a €30 price tag I’d say that’s appropriate value for money. In fact, given that time (and money!) is precious, I wouldn’t be opposed to more games giving us shorter, but quality, campaigns at more affordable prices. If you’re a fan of the series this is an easy game to recommend. If you’re looking for a fun title to play over a weekend or maybe a nice stocking filler for Christmas then this is certainly worthy of your consideration.
