It’s not often we get something to smile about here on the Emerald Isle, but Des Foley from Co. Carlow has given us a reason to smile. Why? Because Des Foley has won the Nissan PlayStation® GT Academy National Final this week at Silverstone Race Track.
32 drivers took part in the final, staged over two days. Day One saw the competitors compete in a series of grueling online races using some of Nissan’s powerhouses that appear in the Gran Turismo®5 game. On Day Two, the 35 were whittled down to 12, after more virtual racing, media interviews, physical tests and some real life driving in a Nissan 370Z.The drivers were scored on each individual round with the top six headed for the 2012 GT Academy International ‘Race Camp’ which will take place back in Silverstone this August, where one of the six will go forward to the final two days and race against the champions of France, Italy, Benelux, Spain and Portugal, Austria, Switzerland and Poland, for a chance to go on and race a 370Z in the Dubai 24hr International.
Des Foley said after the event:
“I’m knackered, I’m soaked and I’ve got a long journey home, but it’s so worth it! I didn’t expect to win the National Final, but I was aiming for a top six finish, so to be first in the overall standing is the most amazing feeling you can imagine. I’m really going to do all I can to prepare for the GT Academy Race Camp, but for the time being I will enjoy this magic moment from today.”
