Tomb Raider – New Details

The gorgeous Lara Croft has had more reboots than a PC running Windows Vista and the latest game in the long running series will once again be rewriting history when it is released later this year.

With much confusion flying around the web over just what gamers can expect to see from this re-imagining of our favourite adventuring lady’s past, developers Crystal Dynamics are trying to clear somethings up with the release of a new FAQ. The full document is quite long and can be found here, but we’ve picked out some of the prime bits of information for you:

Where does it all fit in?

In short, it doesn’t. This is a new game that wipes the slate clean and has no connection to any of the previous releases in the franchise. A new cannon starts here.

What type of game is this?

There has been much speculation that this will be slotting into the survival-horror genre, that is not the case. The dev’s are calling it a “survival-adventure.” On the gameplay side of things Melee, ranged combat, and stealth will all play a big part in things. A new dynamic camera system has been developed which can be manipulated when needed, making combat and climbing those deadly heights a little less difficult.

But I’m British and have an unhealthy fixation with the weather, will there be anything for me?

Kind of. There have been some reports that the game will feature a day/night cycle and changing weather patterns but this isn’t the case. What it will have is a sytem which is “contextual to the narrative,” that’s a posh way to say that the time of day and whether it’s raining or not will depend on your position on the map.

Can I give Lara what she REALLY needs?

You dirty git! No you can’t! Oh you mean food and such, yes you can. Lara will need to find some kind of sustenance to keep her going and all though you will not have a full simulation experience you are going to have to find things like food to make sure Ms Croft doesn’t keel over halfway through a climb.

What can I play it on?

Tomb Raider will be available on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. PC gamers will have the option of using either the good ol’ mouse and keyboard approach or joypad. There will not be a Wii version of the game but strangely enough an appearance on the Mac is in the pipeline.

When can I play it?

We are still looking at the back end of this year, the gaming gods being kind. When this one hits the shelves however it will be a simultaneous launch, so that should keep everyone happy.
