Google+ Capitulate on Real-Name-Gate

Googles Vice-President of Product Bradley Horowitz has announced via his own Google+ page that they are revising their controversial ‘real name’ policy.

Over the next week users will begin to see nicknames, pseudonyms and maiden names pop up on the social network.

They are making this change even though according to Horowitz only .1% of users have submitted appeals. He says:

“The majority of these users want to simply add nicknames.

About 20% of appeals are actually businesses (who are inadvertently trying to set up their business as a Profile, rather than using Google Plus pages that were intended for this purpose).

And the remaining 20% would either prefer to use a pseudonym or another unconventional name”.

Whilst the number of people who have complained about this strange policy may have been small they certainly were effective in their pursuit of Google. Since the launch of Google+ it has been a bit of a conversation piece amongst users so it’s nice to see Google listening.
