Facebook Timeline: A Monkeys Guide

We are social and friendly monkeys here at Gamerillaz and it has to be said partial to a bit of Facebook. It keeps us up to date with the gamers of the world don’t you know! Which is why when we heard about their new and bound to be controversial timeline update we literally dropped our bananas. See we’re not nearly as evolved as our Homoerectus friends so we really need to be guided through it as simply and clearly as possible. So quit picking fleas and gather round the tree everyone. Here is a guide to the new Facebook Timeline that even a monkey could understand:

What is it?

Timeline is a brand new feature that will replace your tried and trusted profile page over the coming weeks. Think a diary or digital document capturing your life from birth to today in an organised, scrolling, contained timeline. It achieves this through pictures, events, posts etc.

I don’t like change! How much of a change is this?

Pretty significant if we’re honest. This is one of the biggest changes so far. It will replace your profile page and wall but you do have a certain amount of control considering that when you enable it you have the option of taking seven days to trick around with it before it’s published online. When you go to Facebook that feed page will be the same but when people view your unique page it will be the fancy new timeline that they will see.

Here’s a dirty Facebook word… Privacy?

Overall everyone will be able to view it. However the seven day grace period will allow you to change permission settings and tinker about with all of your content, each photo, each post etc. And just like before you will have control over each entry going forward via an easy to use drop down menu. The ‘View as’ function lets you see how your timeline looks to the world and the ‘only me’ function is there for the things you wish to keep private.

When do I get it?

Some of you may have already received the option on your welcome page. For others expect to be getting it by Dec. 22nd. If you can’t wait that long type facebook.com/timeline and press the little green button. Wham! You have it.

Check out this video for a visual treat and explanation of what’s going on:

Speaking in September Zuckerberg said “Millions and millions of people have spent years curating the stories of their lives, and today there’s just no good way to share them. We think this is a real problem and we think that we have the solution”.

That’s what he thinks. What do you think? Like or Dislike? Sound off in the comments below.
