Star Wars: The Old Republic – Overview

When LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment announced that their MMORPG, Star Wars Galaxies, would be shutting down in December of 2011 after an 8 year run, it hardly came as a surprise. As what was on the gaming horizon promised to be bigger and better than had been previously seen, not just in the Star Wars franchise, but possibly in the MMO market as a whole.

The Old Republic was first announced in October 2008 and since then we’ve had quite an insight into what to expect upon release, so here is a run down of what we can expect to see when the game launches on the 20th of December.

Plot and Setting

The game starts 300 years after the events of the brilliant Knights of the Old Republic series with the re-emerging Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic forming a tenuous peace, which sits in the Star Wars timeline at around 3500 years before the events of the films. After the 28 year long Great Galactic War, the Jedi Order are seen as being responsible for the rise of the Sith and have fled Coruscant relocating to Tython, the place where the Jedi had been originally formed, in an attempt to seek guidance from the Force. Meanwhile, the Sith have taken control of Korriban and have established a Sith Academy on the planet. Bioware has stated that The Old Republic will be a heavily story driven MMO unlike many others whom sacrifice narrative for gameplay.

You can find out more information on the games backstory and law in the trailers below provided by the good folks at The background story is also featured in a new comic series from Dark Horse with two web comics released so far, the first, Threat to Peace, covering a time period of ten years from the signing of the peace treaty on Coruscant to the events at the start of the game, and a second, Blood of the Empire, set 25 years before the establishment of the peace treaty following a Sith apprentice on a secret mission. There have also so been a number of novels produced to fill in the timeline leading up to in game events including Fatal Alliance by Sean Williams, Deceived by Paul S Kemp and Revan by Drew Karpyshyn.
